This beautifully illustrated counting and singalong app version of the 2004 book introduces young readers to the creatures of the coral reef.
The original book is enhanced by simple, well-executed animations. With a touch or a jiggle, kids can send baby fish swimming, puffer fish puffing and squid squirting ink. After a one-by-one introduction to the featured coral-reef babies from one octopus to 10 seahorses, a “Find the Babies” game brings them all back together for one final count. Backed by music and ocean sounds, the text is read or charmingly sung by the book’s multitalented author, or readers can choose to read to themselves. True to the publisher’s mission to connect children to nature, the app includes photographs and factual information about the sea life in the story. Additional pages introduce the author, illustrator, developer and publishers. Artist Canyon explains how she created the illustrations with polymer clay and tools from her kitchen in an accessible way that encourages children to create their own art projects. In fact, counting skills and science aside, her vibrant pictures of the coral-reef habitat are enough to make this app appealing to readers of all ages.
With a format that includes science, math, art, music and reading, it still manages to be what learning should be—fun.

Over in the Ocean: In a Coral Reef, by Dawn Publications and Simply Nature Media, is a brilliant app that’s chock full of Fishy Facts. This darling rhyming and repeating number story promises to draw in young kids and keep them hooked.
Children count, poke and jiggle the ocean animal babies to make them graze, skitter, dart, jump, grind and much more. There is a special game where children have to find all the babies in a counting game. This app is a delightful way to reinforce multi-sensory learning. Additional app pages have information about coral reef animals with the different species featured, including a photograph of each. Great teaching tool for many levels!
This App is jam-packed with vibrant colors, engaging interactivity, fluid poetry, predictable text and “teachable moments” with the infusion of content areas such as math (counting skills) & science (sea life)!
We must give credit where credit is due. The book was written by Marianne Berkes, a teacher, librarian, and children’s theater director. The magnificent artist is Jeanette Canyon, who loves working with polymer clay and using colors, patterns, and lots of texture in her work. RUN to buy this app! The developer, Malachi Bazan, made this app come alive with all the wonderful interactivity. Rumor has it, a series is underway. Stay tuned!

This counting and sing-along book is a must have! I have the actual book and I was very excited to check out this app. All I can say is WOW! I have enjoyed reading the original book every year in my classroom, but now having experienced this app version of the story, I would have to say that my students and I probably enjoyed it even more than the book! Even though there are three options, most often my students picked for the story to be sang to them and they would even sing along with it! It was a joy to see how my students would interact with the story and how much they learned about each ocean animal baby. Don’t forget to tap on the baby animals on each page to see what they can do! As a teacher, I love apps that have an educational aspect and not just something fun to do. Over in the Ocean App is perfect. At the end of the story kids have the chance to see actual real-life photographs of the animals they just read about and learn some factual information to help them better understand how these babies grow and live.
Over in the Ocean: In a Coral Reef is a great sing-along story with cute little ocean animal babies! Your kids will enjoy reading and singing along with the book and learn all about ocean life at the same time! Even after you have read it several times you will still appreciate the spectacular animations and illustrations! This app brings the actual book alive and you and your kids will keep coming back to read, sing and play!!

Five star review – Amazing magnetic attraction to facts and exquisite creative detail – “We had the original book which was wonderful for our grandchildren. We enjoyed the story and the artwork was beautiful. This interactive version makes it clear why children and adults are delighted by the audio and visual presentation of these book apps and help to really appreciate the talent and creativity of both the illustrator and author. We will be on the lookout for more examples, like this, from these artists and educators.”

Five star review – Sensational Story & Interactive Learning App – “My 18 month old daughter and I had such a wonderful time reading and playing along with the ocean animals in Over in the Ocean: In a Coral Reef! The bright, textured colors were fun for both to look at and the counting on each page was a great educational tool. She loves being able to touch each animal as we count. I like that there are multiple ways to move through the story—mama reads or the app can read or sing for us! This app will grow with us for many years as she learns to read and delves more into science subjects like ocean life. We can’t wait for more Dawn books to turn into apps!”

Five star review – What a fun book! – “This is not just a counting book, not just a book for emergent readers about ocean life, and not just a colorful picture book about fish babies . . . It’s all these, rolled up in one!”
